Is Eczema Contagious? Contact, Infection and When to Get Help

No. Eczema itself is not contagious: you cannot catch atopic dermatitis from another person or pass it to them. A separate skin infection can occur alongside eczema, however. New painful blisters, fever or rapidly worsening skin should not be dismissed just because eczema is noncontagious.

Can you catch eczema by touching someone?

The American Academy of Dermatology states that atopic dermatitis does not spread from person to person. Ordinary contact with someone who has this condition does not transmit their eczema.

Eczema is an umbrella term; atopic dermatitis is its most common form. This explanation concerns diagnosed eczema, not every unexplained itchy rash. If the diagnosis is uncertain, a clinician needs to assess the rash rather than assuming it is eczema.

Why infection can happen even though eczema is not contagious

Atopic dermatitis involves inflammation and a weakened skin barrier. Cracks and damaged areas can let microbes enter more easily. This infection risk is different from the cause of eczema itself.

The NEA describes genetic and environmental contributions and an increased risk of skin infections. A tendency to eczema running in a family is not evidence that one relative infected another.

Use two separate questions when discussing a changed rash: Is this the usual eczema, and could there also be an infection? The answer to the first question does not rule out the second.

Cold sores require a specific precaution

Herpes simplex, the virus associated with cold sores, can cause eczema herpeticum when it infects vulnerable skin. This uncommon infection can be serious; it is not eczema becoming contagious.

AAD advice for children with eczema includes avoiding skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a cold sore and not sharing items that touch the mouth, such as drinking glasses or lip balm. These precautions concern the virus, not avoidance of a child because they have eczema.

Painful, rapidly spreading blisters with fever or flu-like symptoms need immediate medical care. Anyone with suspected eczema herpeticum needs urgent assessment; a rash near the eye also needs prompt attention.

Oozing does not identify the cause by itself

Eczema and infection can both cause oozing or crusts. The AAD’s pediatric guide lists honey-colored crusts, pus-filled blisters, cold-sore-like lesions and spreading redness as possible infection signs.

For a child with these signs but otherwise acting normally, contact their dermatologist. Fever or flu-like symptoms call for immediate medical care. A photograph or a single symptom cannot identify the germ or choose treatment.

Explain the distinction without isolating the person

A useful way to explain diagnosed atopic dermatitis is: “The eczema cannot pass to you. A new infection would be a different problem and needs its own assessment.” This wording separates everyday reassurance from a reason to seek care.

Follow the existing clinician-directed eczema plan and ask about a new or changing rash. Do not infer from the word noncontagious that every blister, sore or fever is harmless.
